I went to see Family of the Year at The Black Sheep in Colorado Springs, and was pleasantly surprised by their opener, The Mowgli’s, who, quite frankly, blew them out of the water. Typically I listen to opening bands that I haven’t heard of before about a week before a show so I know what to expect, but I went in blindly to this concert. All i knew was that Family of the Year was headlining, so I would be happy either way.
I wasn’t prepared for how much I was going to enjoy The Mowgli’s performance over FOTY. Not only were they more energetic and had amazing vocals, but they were also pretty down-to-earth guys (and girl). They seemed to be genuinley appreciative of the immense support and interaction they received from the audience as a whole.
Their tagline “Love’s Not Dead” resonated with me as I listened to their music with fresh ears. Their selection of songs were uplifting, and you could feel the positive energy throughout the entire room.
Now, this is not to say that Family of The Year was bad. Far from it. They put on a great performance, but it was very much expected. There was nothing unique or exciting about it, and I think the overall feeling was that no one was impressed, as was obvious by the lack of enthusiasm for an encore.
However, the whole night was a blast for me and was one of the better concerts I have been to. I left feeling very satisfied with the whole show, and honestly, I can’t wait to see The Mowgli’s live again.
